چکیده

From the orientation studies performed so far, both ways to recycle Am in PWR/MOX cores, homogeneous in MOX or heterogeneous in target pins, appear feasible, provided that enriched UO2 is used as support of the MOX fuel. Multiple recycling can then proceed and stabilise Pu and Am quantities. With respect to the Pu multiple recycling strategy, recycling Am in addition needs 1/3 more U, and creates 3 times more Curium. Thus, although feasible, such a fuel cycle is complicated and brings about a significant cost penalty, not quantified yet. The advantage of the heterogeneous option is to allow to manage in different ways the Pu in MOX fuel and the Am in target pins. For example, should Am remain combined to Cm after reprocessing, the recycling of a mix of Am+Cm could be deferred to let Cm transform into Pu before irradiation. The Am+Cm targets could also stay longer in the reactor, so as to avoid further reprocessing if possible.

Analysis of Nuclear Proliferation Resistance of DUPIC Fuel Cycle

This study compares the proliferation resistance of DUPIC (Direct Use of Spent PWR Fuel in CANDU) fuel cycle with other fuel cycle cases. The other fuel cycles considered in this study are PWR of once-through mode (PWR-OT), PWR of reprocessing mode (PWR-MOX), in which spent PWR fuel is reprocessed and recovered plutonium is used for making MOX (Mixed Oxide), CANDU with once-through mode (CANDU-...

The Effect of Ln(III)/An(III) Separation on Feasibility of TRU Recycling in PWRs

This work examines the effect of recycling Ln(III) fission products together with An(III) TRU in existing PWRs without separating them as commonly assumed. TRU recycling in three different fuel forms was studied: U-MOX, Th-MOX, and Fertile Free Fuel. We analyzed the effect of Ln(III) separation on fuel cycle length, efficiency of TRU destruction, and the core reactivity feedback coefficients. T...

Long-term Environmental Impact of Underground Disposal of P&t Waste

The long-term radiological impact of underground disposal of vitrified HLW (high-level waste) resulting from different P&T strategies has been evaluated. The considered P&T strategies include recycling of Pu and Np in homogeneous mode and Am in heterogeneous mode in CAPRA reactors or EFRs (European Fast Reactor). The safety assessment has been performed for three different types of host rocks, ...

Public Health Risks of Substituting Mixed-Oxide For Uranium Fuel in Pressurized- Water Reactors

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a contract to the consortium Duke Cogema Stone and Webster (DCS) to dispose of up to 33 tonnes of excess weapons-grade plutonium (WG-Pu) by irradiating it in the form of mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel in four U.S. commercial pressurized-water reactors (PWRs). This paper estimates the increase in risk to the public from using WG-MOX at these reactors and f...
